How to Enter Into His Gates With Thanksgiving

As we enter into this Holiday Season, we have the opportunity to enter a doorway of greater intimacy with God and each other. To capture the true essence of giving thanks, we need to follow the pathway of praise.

1. Encourage One Another

A praise pathway that will help you grow closer to God and each other is to spend time gathering with believers. Just being together can inspire your your heart to be thankful. In this world you can be in the middle of a crowd, and yet feel all alone. True community is the joy of knowing and being known. Yes, it takes risk to reach out and share who you are with others, but the joy of living life together far out weighs the risk. When you encourage someone else, you will also be encouraged.

2. Give Thanks for One Another

Being thankful to God for one another is essential to building life-giving relationships. It is seeing and valuing the how God has made each one in His image. It’s positively reflecting on the goodness of God in bringing others into your life. It’s entering in with a thankful heart, for all the things in your life.

“…Giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ” Ephesians 5:20 NKJV

3. Serve One Another

A praise pathway that you will never truly experience if you stay outside of community is servanthood. Learning to truly serve one another is our first step of learning to serve God. Jesus made an example of this servant-heart when He knelt down and washed His disciples feet in John 13. This night  he was focused on giving his disciples their last instructions before his death and resurrection. He choose to do it with a towel and a basin. He took on a despised job of the servant class to disciple his disciples in servanthood.

When we serve one another, we learn to serve God. One of the first Scriptures that I memorized and taught my children is Psalm 100.

“Make a joyful shout to the Lord, all you lands!
Serve the Lord with gladness;
Come before His presence with singing….” Psalm 100:1-2 NKJV

To serve (Hb ‘abad) means to work for, serve, do labor for someone; to be a servant; to worship. Jesus himself was “The Messianic Servant of the Lord” Jesus taught us to serve God with His whole life of obedience.

4. Worship with One Another

Yes, it is wonderful to come into God’s presence in our private times of bible reading, prayer and devotion. Yet the power of worshiping God is multiplied when we worship with one another. Psalm 100 was written as a contemporary praise song that would be song antiphonally by the people in the temple in Jerusalem. We learn some practical aspects about praise and worship through the outline of Psalm 100.

  • Sing Loudly to God– Psalm 100:1 (sing & shout your praise)
  • Joyfully Serve God — Psalm 100:2 (when we serve others we are worshiping God)
  • Diligently Follow God — Psalm 100:3 (Know who God is, He made us in His image)
  • Regularly Worship God — Psalm 100:4 (We enter His gates with thanksgiving)
  • Reach every generation — Psalm 100:5 (Teach God’s goodness, mercy & truth)
